XiTRACK™ Projects: Falkirk
High Tunnel
XiTRACK
Polymer was applied to ballast on the transition from plain line
to
concrete slab-track at Falkirk High Tunnel Down
Line, East Portal in 2005 to improve the vertical geometry
and lateral alignment of the track where frequent
attention had been necessary.
In order to reduce the dynamic load on the renewed
concrete slab-track, a stiffened transition was necessary.
It was known that a concrete track transition structure
had deteriorated and in addition the site suffered from
water ingress problems and the XiTRACK design had to
accommodate these effects. The XiTRACK GeoComposite
structure was devised to allow track drainage.
Despite some unforeseen site difficulties and problems
directly due to inclement weather which were overcome, the
treatment was completed within the scheduled time slot.
The site has subsequently performed as expected.
