XiTRACK™ Projects: Purfleet
Crossing
Deep
Wharf Level Crossing, Purfleet is situated on the Tilbury
Loop and forms part of a private heavily trafficked road
that serves a ferry port and an oil terminal.
The level crossing was showing signs of both bearing
failure and pocketing and rutting due to the weak
formation and the very soft Alluvium clays known to exist
in the subgrade. In view of the current and anticipated
future loading conditions, the XiTRACK treatment was
considered desirable in order to provide a long-term cost
effective solution.
A XiTRACK design was prepared for the site and polymer
applied in the specified pattern and, including all
groundworks, the site was returned to full rail and road
traffic after a total closure time of only three days.
Three years later, the site is performing as expected
and without problems.
Installation and access management was led by Balfour
Beatty Projects; work was co-ordinated by Balfour Beatty
Rail Technologies Limited.
